Happy (Digital) Accidents – Blue Nile Falls

by John Downey

After working this image to death in Photomatix without successful results, I almost dismissed it as a lost cause. Were it not for hitting “V” (in Lightroom) before delete, I never would have considered the grayscale version. I captured a series of various exposures to render the huge tonal range between the fading sunset and deep shadows of the falls. However, it never occurred to me to think black and white after several frustrating attempts to resolve a color version. This result was simply the accident of hitting the “V” key and…”whoa, that’s cool!”  Masks were applied to the foreground and water, then toning for overall warmth.
