Highland Priest and Meskel Flowers
by John Downey
I was photographing Meskel flowers by the side of Route 3, east of Lake Tana in a place called Amboa (guess you can’t call it a town when there isn’t one) when this priest appeared (they do that in these parts) and stopped to stare at me for a few moments. In my limited Amharic and somewhat flailing hand gestures, I asked him if he would pose against the flowers. He walked into the field, turned around and stood as if he knew exactly where to be. When I finished shooting about ten frames, I thanked him and he sauntered through the field of flowers until he was gone. He never said a word.
