Tree #2, Finote Selam

by John Downey

Finote Selam is a very small town in the highlands of Amhara, Ethiopia.  This was obviously not a well-visited location for tourists as locals slowly gathered nearby but kept their distance.  Once I began talking to them, they crowded around and were surprised I spoke Amharic (caveat: maybe ten words).  The tree explodes from small kiosks to either side and was amazingly grand compared to everything else around it. There are a lot of these old-growth sentinels scattered about the area.  The hotel in the background, under the tree and to the left of the trunk, is the vantage point of the previous Finote Selam post.
