Banana Trees and Tukul – Wonchi Crater Lake, Ethiopia
by John Downey
Wonchi crater lake is 78 meters deep and hosts some of the clearest water I have seen in Ethiopia. It’s a relatively quiet community where the locals leave you alone but will stop to talk if engaged. I photographed this scene on the way down a dirt road that leads to the water’s edge – in the background to the right. In the distance is the island that hosts Cherkos Monastery. Rich, green barley fields, banana stands and other crops line Wonchi’s cone, some farms so steep, it’s hard to imagine harvesting on an incredibly steep incline. This was a second trip and, before the green fields dry out, I hope to return one more time.
