Hot Springs Near Shala Lake

Water bubbling from the Earth, steam hissing from vents in the sand.  Hot enough to make you wince.  97°C and just below boiling.  Locals cook ears of corn; husks strewn about the springs.

Artificially-made pools allow water to cool… a bit.

Some fill thermoses and cups from the boiling source.  “It cleans disease and discomfort,” one local guide told us.  And then some.
