Warthog and Baby. Bushveld, South Africa.

by John Downey

Before you say, “awwww, isn’t that cute,” consider the size of the female’s tusks.  I first started to feed these pigs apple slices and just as the big female came up to me, someone from behind said, “don’t feed them by haa…”  She lunged at me with her head down and snorted deep.  I rocketed backwards almost two meters, or so it felt that much.  After they ate, lethargy set in and I slowly crouched, then kneeled with a 100mm macro lens, watching for body movements.  While I composed, the baby attempted to nurse, then came right up to the front and collapsed, as if to ready for the shot.

Don’t try this at home (or anywhere else for that matter) with a warthog.
