Simien Mountains – Spectacular Ethiopian Landscapes
by John Downey
Three of us trekked six days in the Simien backcountry, hiking in and out of some of the most rugged Ethiopian terrain. Cold nights above 3600m left us sleepless but complete silence compensated for the unrelenting din back home in Addis. The following series of posts will feature images of our mountain hikes and amazing wildlife, to include Lammergeier Vultures, Waliya Ibex and Gelada baboons (yes, more).
Summit of Ras Dejen, highest point in Ethiopia. 4,550m (14,928 ft). Despite the varied and ubiquitous types of automatic weapons shouldered by scouts, Ethiopia has comparatively little gun-related violence.
