Whale Sharks, Djibouti.
by John Downey
These whale sharks were feeding on [massive amounts] of plankton in the Gulf of Tadjoura, Djibouti. Whale sharks, the largest of fish, can age up to 100 years old, span more than 45 feet and weigh up to 47,000 pounds. Yet these filter feeders pose no threat to divers and have no known natural enemies. The plankton was so thick in this area, the sharks bumped into one another during the frenzy, including swiping me aside with a tail on a couple of occasions.
