What Are Your Kids Watching? An Editorial Concept Shoot.
by John Downey
I wanted to achieve a secretive yet surprised look on my daughter’s face to create tension for the viewer (read: parents). I shot this late in the afternoon, allowing for some glow though the blinds. Her face is illuminated by an ipad, using a flashlight app to get the brightest light for her face. We went through a couple dozen shots; it was tough for her to remain perfectly still and thus sharp for a long exposure and I wanted the ipad to parallel her face without blocking her chin. Finally, some faint fill from a small softbox right of camera to bring out the area of the blanket around the subject.
Does it work?
